Health Promotion Forum of New Zealand Runanga Whakapiki Ake i te Hauora o Aotearoa
Boyd Broughton

Age: 33 years experience being me.
Iwi: Te Rarawa, Nga Puhi, Ngati Porou
Dependents:
Three kids and one pregnant Kai Tahu, number four is due in November.
What
do I do? I am still striving to become a Ninja Warrior, but
in the meantime I work for Counties Manukau District Health Board where I
am the Living Smokefree Project Manager - Maori Youth Leadership.
As part of the smokefree team my focus is on Maori youth. Attempting
to create a culture with our young where living smokefree is not just
the norm, but is a priority to make it matter.
I am also learning
how to be a father, a fiancé and a retired ‘has-been-that-never-was'
league player doing not too bad in two out of three.
Education
/ Experience: I have 33 years experience being me, being
Maori and being smokefree. Previously working as a ‘dusty' or rubbish
man, then moving into customer services and sales roles for various
money making organisations before working for Hapai te Hauora Tapui as a
Quality Coordinator and then as a CAYAD kaimahi. I was invited to work
for a short time with Auckland Regional Public Health as a Smokefree
Health Promoter and from October 2008 have been at Counties Manukau
District Health Board as ‘Living Smokefree Project Manager - Maori Youth
Leadership.' No one else has since invited me to work for them.
I
am currently studying part-time at Auckland University of Technology for
some flash tohu Maori Development and I also support a number of whanau
to increase the level of reo Maori they speak in their homes.
Interests:
These have definitely changed in the last few years with the arrival of
tamariki of my own that will always hug, kiss and love me.
But some
interests remain such as rugby league, touch rugby, kiwi tag, cycling,
running and playstation, ‘Jonah Lomu Rugby' no one can beat me!
My two main passions whanau and Maori drive me in all I do.
Kia ora Mauri ora.
