Significance of Nutrition to Pacific health, and Relevance of Pacific health models

The relevance of Pacific health models to health promotion and background information on nutrition and Pacific health will be examined.

Presenters

Fuimaono Karl Pulotu-Endemann

Fuimaono is a Pacific health consultant, with many years of professional experience in public health and mental health. He led the development of Fonofale, a Pacific health model. Fuimaono will present on Fonofale as a Pacific health model.

Mafi Funaki-Tahifote

Mafi is Team leader – Nutrition & Physical Activities, Pacific Heartbeat, National Heart Foundation in Auckland. Mafi’s presentation titled “Healthy Eating & Pacific Health” provides background information on nutrition and Pacific health, as well as practical information to improve the nutritional status of Pacific peoples in New Zealand, considering the high rates of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Ieti Lima

Ieti is Senior Health Promotion Strategist – Pacific at the Health Promotion Forum. He is also a research consultant on research projects lead by the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs. Ieti will present an overview of Pacific health promotion which provides the context for the above workshop topics.

Workshop Objectives

  • To explore background information on nutrition and Pacific health
  • To examine the relevance of Pacific health models for health promotion work
  • How to apply Pacific models to health promotion

Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to

  • understand the value of ‘healthy eating’ to improve the nutritional status of Pacific peoples
  • demonstrate an understanding of the Fonofale health model, and
  • how to apply them in their health promotion work.
