Working with the Whanau Ora Tool

Introduction

The aim of the Whanau Ora Tool – It is a practical guide to developing health programmes where Whanau, Hapu, Iwi and Maori communities play a leading role in achieving Whanau Ora. It places Maori at the centre of programme planning, implementation and evaluation. Its aim is for Maori families to be supported to achieve fullness of health and well being, as defined by them, within Te Ao Maori and New Zealand Society as a whole.


Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to;
To promote the Whanau Ora Tool in the context of other strategy and planning documents
To assist providers to develop services to improve Whanau Ora
To have a practical guide to developing and implementing Whanau Ora to programmes
To enhance the effectiveness of health services that contributes to Maori Health outcomes


About the Facilitator

Miria James –Hohaia; Strategic Advisor, Maori Public Health, Health and Disability Systems Strategy Directorate, MoH.Miria has been tasked with ensuring this tool is embedded in the practice of Health Promotion and Public Health. Miria has a background in community development, having worked with the Community Employment Group as an Iwi development (economic) advisor. She assisted Maori Women’s Development Inc. to design and implement business mentoring and facilitation programme.

This meeting is organised by the Health Promotion Forum as part of a contract with the Ministry of Health to provide seminars, workshops and other services on health promotion.
